Anaconda montana golf course1/1/2024 The course was plenty busy the Friday I visited, so if you're going to play, book a tee time in advance. The back nine will wear you out otherwise. If you're not from Montana and you're not used to the elevation, ride in a cart. One must learn to judge the wind well to be successful on that hole and many others. I had to start a tee shot with a 9-iron out over the cart path to the right and let the wind bring it back left to the green.with water even farther left. That's difficult to do on a short (140-yard) par-3 with water nearby. But when that wind is coming from the left or right, steady your nerves and play into it, allowing for the ball to drift back to where you want it to land. Tee shots with the wind will have you hitting the ball near the low end of pro distances. Tee shots into that wind can be disappointing. This snake-charmer of a course would be amazing if it wasn't for the ever-present wind from the west or southwest. But for a first-timer, they're a bit unnerving because one can look at their scorecard and a GPS, but nothing simulates "eyes on" a fairway. Those are fun if you've played a course before. The front nine consists of lots of blind shots. Yes, a wayward shot will penalize a player and in some cases severely. The back nine holes has lots of elevation changes, some with narrower fairways than others, but all are manageable. I was repairing my ball mark on every hole. Yes, the greens were extremely receptive to a golf ball landing on them, biting and spinning back to the pin. What I played, however, was anything but. It's Montana, right? Harsh weather conditions over the winter and all. I didn't know what to expect to be honest.
